Mr.
Conger first recognized his interest in the mental health
field through volunteerism. Soon after moving to Los Angeles
from Louisiana in 1991, he began providing caregiving for
Persons Living With AIDS through the late Jerry Florence's
organization "Go with the Flo" and Cassandra Christensen's
"Project Nightlight." His desire to continue such
work in a professional capacity prompted him to begin working
towards licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist.
Mr.
Conger completed his Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology
at Antioch University in Marina Del Rey, California in 1997,
having focused on identity development and stigma management
of gay men and women.
Soon
after graduation, he accepted a clinical staff position
in Kaiser Permanente's Chemical Dependency Recovery Program,
treating substance users and codependent family members
both in early and on-going recovery.
Mr.
Conger joined Sharon Rae Deacon and Associates in the spring
of 1998, bringing a broad range of interests and talents
as he draws on his diverse background and training. In working
with adults, his special interests include providing supportive
therapy to gay men and lesbians through the "coming
out" process, psychotherapy for victims of "gay-bashing"
and other violent crimes through the State of California's
Victims/Witnesses of Crime Assistance Program, and individual
and group therapy for Persons With AIDS and their caregivers.
He has been trained in hypnosis through Southern California
Society of Clinical Hypnosis for use in behavioral management,
including the treatment of addictive behaviors. Moreover,
he is fluent in both Spanish and American Sign Language.
Mr.
Conger's current work with children is another area that
grew out of volunteer service. From 1991 through 1996, he
served as tutor and mentor with Heart of Los Angeles Youth
(HOLA), a program for inner city young people who are at
risk for gang involvement. In 1996, he began his year-long
Marriage and Family Therapist traineeship at the Assistance
League Of Southern California's Family Service Agency, where
he worked almost exclusively with children who had been
exposed to and traumatized by domestic violence. Now at
Sharon Rae Deacon and Associates, he treats physically,
sexually, and emotionally abused children through the State
of California's Victims/Witnesses of Crime Assistance Program.
He also expands the practice at Deacon and Associates by
organizing ADHD Social Skills classes for children to complement
the neurofeedback they are already receiving.
